Description of Work

An Environmental Health Sanitarian, under general supervision, performs routine and special inspections, evaluations, and investigations for compliance with federal, state and local laws, ordinances and regulations relative to environmental health and protection. An employee in this class may inspect food service establishments, private wells, residential sewage treatment systems, body art facilities, camp grounds, children’s camps, public swimming pool facilities, and other facilities for compliance with environmental health standards. This employee also investigates complaints relative to food borne illnesses, environmental nuisances, air quality issues and other environmental concerns. An Environmental Health Sanitarian will also assist in monitoring (via self-evaluations and peer reviews) and adherence to program protocols and procedures for quality assurance, improvement and compliance using pre-established standards, policies and guidelines. This position is also responsible for documenting accurate and timely records and reports of evaluations, inspections and other work activities in addition to other duties as required. 
During a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties or perform emergency response roles, either inside or outside Muskegon County.

Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications

  1. Possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field which includes an algebra course or higher-level math and at least 30 semester/45 quarter hours in science.
  2. Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.

Physical Conditions / Work Location

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
An employee in this class must be in good physical condition and be able to perform the critical functions of the job which may include occasional lifting in excess of seventy-five (75) pounds; and for walking on uneven terrain, bending, stooping, turning a soil auger, and standing for extended periods because the employee frequently makes on-site inspections and evaluations.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
An Environmental Health Sanitarian, while working out of Public Health Muskegon County, performs field inspections requiring frequent travel to locations within Muskegon County.

EVALUATION CONTENT

The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County appointed physician before the first day of employment.  An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test.  Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position. When such check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check.  Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list from which to fill present and future vacancies in this classification in the County system.  For each opening, the Department Head has her/his choice of the candidates who meet the required minimum entrance qualifications.  This list remains in effect for three months unless exhausted or extended.
