Berrien County Health Department – Environmental Health Sanitarian

The Berrien County Health Department is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the role of an Environmental Health Sanitarian. This role will work directly in the food program and involves inspecting restaurants and food establishments, enforcing state and local food safety regulations, and educating operators on safe food handling practices. Duties: 

  • Conducts complex environmental health inspections and evaluations, recommending appropriate actions for programs requiring departmental approval, licensing, or permits. 
  • Ensures compliance with county and state health regulations through inspections of facilities such as food service operations, public swimming pools, bathing beaches, and on-site water and sewage systems. 
  • Investigates public health concerns, including foodborne and waterborne disease outbreaks and groundwater contamination. 
  • Reviews subdivision plans and permit applications related to water and wastewater systems. 
  • Offers technical guidance to architects, engineers, and developers on sanitation standards. 
  • Provides assistance and information concerning environmental health issues to citizens, agencies and other interested groups. 
  • Prepares comprehensive reports and correspondence.

Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of environmental health, biological, chemical or physical sciences, or engineering and three years as an environmental health sanitarian working in general environmental health. 
  • If not yet registered with the State of Michigan as a Registered Sanitarian, the employee may qualify for "Sanitarian" status with a salary range of $53,522 - $61,958.
  • To qualify, candidates must possess an Associate Degree in the field of environmental health, biological, chemical or physical sciences, or engineering and a minimum of two (2) years of experience with environmental health services, food service inspection, sewage treatment or other environmental health duties.

Special Requirements: 

  • State of Michigan registration as a Registered Sanitarian. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license throughout the course of employment. 
  • Duties require sufficient mobility and physical condition to perform essential functions of the position which may include lifting objects up to 50lbs, walking on uneven or slippery terrain, bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods of time in a wide variety of uncontrollable weather conditions, temperatures, and indoor/outdoor environments. 
  • In times of a public health emergency, may be required to report for specialized assigned duties inside or outside of Berrien County.

Required Knowledge and Skills: 

  • Working knowledge of current environmental health practices, techniques, and programs, as well as relevant county and state regulations. 
  • Proficient in applying environmental health principles to real-world issues and enforcing regulations with professionalism and tact. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with colleagues, agencies, and the public. 
  • Capable of clearly presenting and discussing environmental health topics with groups of various sizes. 
  • Skilled in gaining voluntary compliance with minimal need for formal legal enforcement. 
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with the community.
