Membership Dues Increased $5 for Active and Associate Memberships

Hello,

The Board has voted to increase membership fees for both Associate and Active membership levels from $45 a year to $50 a year.

This increase mirrors inflation of costs to the organization. This is the first fee increase in approximately 10 years, and has been kept as low as possible for the members.

This is effective July 1st, 2022 (start of the next fiscal year).

Proposed Amendment to the Constitution

To expand availability of our association and open it up to more students that may be pursuing a degree in Environmental Health or related field, an Amendment to the Constitution has been proposed by the Executive board to be voted on during the annual business meeting. The board proposes that Article IV Section 10 be modified from:

“A non-voting student Executive Board Representative position will be made available for each college or university in the State of Michigan that has an environmental health degree program and that has a student environmental health association or club.”

New proposed Article IV Section 10:

“A non-voting student Executive Board Representative position will be made available for each college or university in the State of Michigan that has an environmental health, public health sanitation, sanitary science, sanitary engineering, or allied degree program, as approved by the Executive Board.”

Our association will be able to attract more students to become active in the association and further the growth and sustainability of the association in the future. This change will be in-line with our current standards for student membership which is not restricted to only Environmental Health majors.

This will be voted on during the Annual Business Meeting on March 23, 2022.

This annual three-day educational conference is developed for septic tank service providers/pumpers, local public health, engineers, consultants, installation contractors and other interested parties. Participants will learn about the latest in on-site wastewater industry trends, regulatory changes, wastewater management options and the latest technologies. Organized as a joint venture by the Michigan Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association (MOWRA), the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ), the Michigan Environmental Health Association (MEHA), the Michigan Septic Tank Association (MSTA), the Michigan Water Environment Association (MWEA) and Michigan State University (MSU) to educate those involved in the on-site wastewater field.

There are a total of 17.5 continuing septage education (CSE) hours available for this conference.

Water Infrastructure 101 Workshop

A workshop aimed at providing basic information on topics associated with waterworks system infrastructure will be held the afternoon of March 9. The goal of the workshop is to provide the general public with a better understand of the complex waterworks systems. Presentations will address how water travels to and from a household, how it is tested, treated, and regulated. Industry experts, state, and local officials will be on hand to answer questions. More information, including a detailed agenda, will be posted soon. The workshop is free to the public; however, registration is required. NEHA Scholarships Available

The Michigan Environmental Health Association is pleased to announce we have been awarded a 2017 Food Safety Education Grant from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). With MDARD’s financial support, MEHA will be offering scholarships for the 2017 NEHA Annual Education Conference (AEC) for food industry regulators.

MEHA members in good standing who primarily work in the food protection area are eligible to request training scholarships for the NEHA AEC. Specific details are on the scholarship application form. All applications are due by March 16, 2017. Award winners will be contacted via email on March 31, 2017. Information about NEHA’s 2017 AEC is available on their website.

Additional scholarship money is available for MEHA members who are not employed primarily in the food safety arena. Download the application here.

National Groundwater Awareness Week will take place March 5-11, 2017, and the National Ground Water Association (NGWA) would like to invite your organization to be a “Groundwater Advocate.”

This is a time when NGWA and its partners educate the public about the resource of groundwater, its importance to public health, quality of living, and the environment. For those who rely on groundwater from a household water well, it also is a time to help them learn how to take care of their water well system.

2016 Update to the CDC Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC)

CDC Releases 2016 Model Aquatic Health Code – The second edition of the MAHC includes important updates to the first edition released in 2014. The MAHC offers science-based guidance that government agencies and the aquatic sector can use to reduce risk for outbreaks, drowning, and chemical injuries at public pools and spas at apartment complexes, hotels, and waterparks. Visit the MAHC website to access the 2016 MAHC, a summary of key changes and a track changes version, a MAHC-based inspection form, updated MAHC infographic and other promotion materials, and updated tool to compare your pool code and practices to those the MAHC recommends.

Join us to hear about a recent study (Verhougstraete et al. 2015) that characterized fecal pollution across the lower peninsula of Michigan. The researchers used source-tracking markers to sample 64 river systems in Michigan for E. coli and the human fecal bacteria B. thetaiotaomicron. Advances in source-tracking allow water scientists to track down the origin of non-point pollution more accurately than ever before.

Septic Systems: Insight Into Your Onsite System

Approximately 43% of Michigan residents rely on onsite wastewater (septic) systems to handle waste water from their homes and businesses. That's over 1.2 million septic systems in use in Michigan today and it's estimated that at least 10% of these are in some level of failure.

This live webinar will discuss what a septic system is, how it works, the best management practices to protect the system and more.

This live webinar will include the presentation by a Health Department sanitarian supervisor with 29 years of septic and well experience, and an engineer from the DEQ. A live question-and-answer session via the chat box will be available.

Food Protection Training Grant Awarded

Michigan Environmental Health Association is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a 2015 Food Safety Education Grant from Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. With MDARD’s financial support, MEHA will be providing informative food protection training sessions during its 2015 annual education conference, funding 2015 AEC scholarships for food industry regulators, and providing regional MEHA affiliate mini grants for regional food training seminars.

Golf Outing Recap

Good morning!

The MEHA Golf Outing attracted 8 foursomes. It certainly appeared that everyone had a good time! The wonderful course, Marywood in Battle Creek, that John Johnson discovered for us four years ago, has provided a VERY nice location for our outing. The great price, several prizes, and a beautiful day helped us to raise $850.00 for the MEHA Endowment Fund.

The 10th annual is already in the works for 2015.

Endowment Update For 2014 MEHA AEC

For the 2014 MEHA AEC the Endowment Committee is changing things up! There will be no silent auction. Instead, we will be holding a 50 / 50 raffle. 50% of the proceeds go straight to the Endowment Fund to support our scholarship program. The other 50% could go home with you! Tickets will be sold at the registration desk Wednesday and Thursday. The grand prize drawing will take place at the awards ceremony.

We are now accepting Scholarship Applications! Click on the “Scholarships” tab on the left side of the screen. The filing deadline is February 1. Scholarships will be awarded at the awards ceremony, during the MEHA AEC.

If you have other suggestions or feedback for the Endowment Committee, please let us know!
