Sub Unit Manager – Regional Community Engagement

This position functions as a first-line professional manager, managing the Regional Community Engagement Sub-Unit staff of the Community Engagement Unit, within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Division of Environmental Health (DEH).

The sub-unit manager works in cooperation with the unit manager and other DEH section and unit managers to implement the goals of the unit, section, division, bureau, and department. This position operates in accordance with the DEH governance structure built around teams and team management. The person in this position works cooperatively with other federal, state, and local health and regulatory agencies. As directed, this position interacts with the public, communities, local officials, and legislators via meetings, telephone conversations, e-mails, public meetings and so on, responding to community health concerns and providing information to protect public health.

Environmental Sanitarian

This individual will serve as an Environmental Sanitarian for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Environmental Health, Chemical Planning and Response Section, Drinking Water and Environmental Sampling Unit. This individual will implement sampling protocols in order to investigate the source of chemical contamination and to provide information essential in the preparation of public health determinations; ensure that all aspects of collection, labeling, and delivery of samples are properly implemented, ensure analytical data are logged and managed according to established protocols, and summarize and report results as tables, graphs, figures, maps, and/or text for each sampling event. This position will interact with the public, representatives from local government, other state agencies, representatives of federal government, and contractual staff in the normal performance of these duties. This position will be required to maintain Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor (LIRA) and 40-hour HAZWOPER certifications. Training will be provided by MDHHS within one year of hire.
