MEHA Scholarships
MEHA has several types of scholarships and awards available. See below for criteria and applications.
Annual Endowment Scholarship
At the December 2010 meeting, the MEHA Board approved the Endowment Committee to begin soliciting applications for the MEHA Endowment Scholarship. There will be two $1,000 educational scholarships available each year.
The MEHA Endowment Scholarship Award provides an opportunity for college students to help fund their college education while working toward a degree. Two scholarships will be awarded annually with no more than $1000 awarded per applicant per year. Scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria:
- The applicant must be pursuing a degree in the Environmental Health profession. Undergraduate applicants must have some core classes with an emphasis on soils, groundwater, wastewater, epidemiology, communicable disease, food service, sanitation and shelter. Post-graduate degree applicants must be pursuing a degree that will further their professional career for the administration of Environmental or Public Health services or programs.
- The applicant may be a college student and currently have a sophomore, junior or senior status; or
- The applicant may be a college student and currently have a post-graduate status and be a current MEHA member in good standing.
- The applicant must be attending a Michigan college / university; or may be a Michigan resident attending an out of state school.
- The applicant must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and provide official transcripts. These transcripts must be sealed and come directly from the college/university.
- The applicant must provide two letters of recommendation from faculty. Post-graduate degree applicants may provide one letter of recommendation from faculty and one letter of recommendation from an employer, supervisor or co-worker.
- The applicant must submit a written essay explaining how the environmental health profession is beneficial to the community. The essay must be at least ½ page long (single spaced, 12 point font) but shall not exceed 3 pages.
- The applicant must complete the MEHA Endowment Scholarship Award Application form.
- All scholarship applications will be reviewed by the Endowment Committee and are subject to final approval by the MEHA Executive Board.
The completed application, official transcripts, letters of recommendation and essay must be received by the Endowment Committee by February 1st of each year. Scholarship recipients will be announced at the MEHA Annual Educational Conference.

Annual
Educational Scholarship
The
Michigan Environmental Health Association (MEHA) is a professional
organization whose main goal is to promote environmental health
through education. MEHA's mission statement is "To provide
MEHA members and environmental health professionals with means to
access information relating to environmental issues."
The
MEHA Educational Scholarship Award is a $500 scholarship granted
once a year to a college student who meets the following criteria:
- The
applicant must be pursuing a degree in the environmental health
profession.
- The
applicant must be a college student and currently have a sophomore,
junior, senior, or post-graduate status.
- The
applicant must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and provide official transcripts.
These transcripts must be sealed and come directly from the college/university.
- The
applicant must provide two letters of recommendation from faculty.
- The
applicant must be a Michigan resident or attending a Michigan
college or university.
The
completed application, official transcripts, and letters of recommendation
must be received by the Professional Development Committee by February
1st of each year . Scholarship recipients will be announced at the
MEHA Annual Educational Conference.

Membership Development Fund
The
MEHA Membership Development Fund is a $500 fund created to assist
MEHA members in furthering their professional development. Any MEHA
member may request funds (up to $150) to attend a function or event
in which they feel will help further their professional development.
Any funds approved will be reimbursed after the event/function.
All funds distributed will come from MEHA'S general fund. To be
considered, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Funds
may only be requested when the applicant has been denied funds
by his/her employer.
- Funds
may only be used for items that will aid in the professional development
of members (ie. conference registration fees, books for a class,
etc.).
- Funds
requested may not exceed $150.
- The
application must be received at least 14 days prior to the event/function.
- If
the application is approved, an award notice will be issued.
- In
order to be reimbursed, the applicant must submit a letter to
the committee stating what they learned at the event/function
and how it helped further his/her professional development. The
applicant must also provide a receipt showing the cost of the
event/function. Fund disbursement requires MEHA Executive Board
approval.

Annual Endowment Special Project Award
The MEHA Endowment Special Project Award provides an opportunity for a MEHA member to obtain money for a special project. Two $1,000 Project Awards will be available each year. Project awards will be granted based on the following criteria:
- The applicant must be applying for funds for a special project or sabbatical that is closely related to environmental health or public health.
- This Award is not for the purpose of supporting members travel or attendance at national conferences, organized training or tuition reimbursement. Funds shall not be used to supplement a member’s income or provide payment for services rendered.
- The applicant must be a current MEHA member in good standing, must have been a MEHA member during the 3 years prior to the application date and must be currently employed in the field of environmental health.
- The applicant shall submit a written request for funds to the Endowment Committee Chair at least 30 days before beginning the project or sabbatical. This request must include the scope of the project and how the award money will be utilized.
- If the award is granted, the applicant shall incur all expenses then submit detailed receipts for re-imbursement.
- After completion of the project the applicant shall write a summary. This summary shall cover the scope of the project and acknowledge the Endowment Fund Special Project Award. This summary shall be presented to the Endowment Committee and the MEHA Executive Board. The summary shall then be submitted for publishing to the MEHA Quarterly Journal and the MEHA Website. The applicant is encouraged to make a presentation at the next MEHA Annual Educational Conference (AEC).
- All proposals will be reviewed by the Endowment Committee and are subject to final approval by the MEHA Executive Board.
Endowment Fund Special Project Criteria
There is no application form for the Endowment Fund Special Project Award. To apply, submit a written scope of your project and how the award money will be used.
